headache recipe

When I got home from work the other day, Tammy mentioned she had a headache. I got out my little bottle of “headache” essential oils and rubbed some on Tammy’s temples and on the back of her neck. She then put a drop on the bottom of each foot. After about 20 minutes I asked her if the oils helped and she said she felt much better.

The recipe I blended is:

Headache
1 oz. carrier oil (extra virgin olive oil)
10 peppermint
10 rosemary
10 lavender
 5 frankincense

(The numbers are drops of essential oil.)

Any one of these oils alone can help relieve a headache. In my notes I have this: “Peppermint appears to prevent your body from sending pain signals to your central nervous system. According to one German study, peppermint works as well as 1,000 mg of acetaminophen.”

Lavender is also supposed to be calming and help headaches. You can soak your feet (or body) in a tub of hot water with a few drops of lavender oil in it. The lavender in the air from the steam also helps when you breath it.

Lavender and tea tree oil can be put directly on your skin, but I’ve read it’s best if most essential oils are diluted with a carrier oil, especially if you have sensitive skin. I’ve just been using extra virgin olive oil lately for this. You have to be careful not to get the essential oils too close to your eyes or, for example, peppermint fumes can make them burn.

What’s cool about the essential oils is that they are good for so many things that if you’re using an essential for a headache, for example, it might help a sinus problem at the same time.

You can google something like “essential oils for headache” or “headache and aromatherapy” to learn more.
